Disney Marathon Weekend and Other Races

by Jenni in Fitness

Disney Marathon Weekend
Disney Marathon Weekend

This one is a decision we will all have to make quite fast. As of Tuesday at 12:00 PM Eastern time, Disney World opened registration for the Disney 2015 Marathon Weekend. Ahhh, I am so excited about it, but am still trying to decide if I can. If you are in the same place, we better make up our minds quickly, the half marathon is already 85% full. Whaattt?! I know, crazy.

Since going to runDisney and checking out all the race availability yesterday, I have also had the sad, sad realization that the Wine and Dine Half Marathon is sold out. Seriously, it was sad day. Oh well, I will just have to sign up quicker for 2015.

As for 2014, here are a few races that I am interested/considering running in. Have you done any of these before? And if so, what was it like?

Key Largo Bridge Run

From what I gather, you run on one of those crazy long bridges that we see all over the Florida Keys. This one is also in November, so the weather should be absolutely beautiful! Seems fun, but early. Why are there so few night runs?

Florida 10 Sarasota

The park where this run takes place is absolutely beautiful. This race is also a bit less than a half marathon, so it would be super great for me in December. I am pretty sure it even has a post race breakfast party. You had me at breakfast... Well, except for the whole bit about needing to run 10-miles before eating. My lazy side is still hung-up on that part.

RAG Sarasota 9K to Marathon

This one also looks pretty great, and close. The only down side I can possibly see is that the entire race is on one, half-mile, track. I have heard that this track is beautiful, but will have to go check it out myself before agreeing to run around it about 26.5 times.

Oh, and its in the morning. Am I the only person who hates running early?

Southernmost Marathon and Half

This looks like sooo much fun! The race ends at the southernmost point of the US and takes you all around Key West. I have also never been to Key West and would love to have a reason to make the trek down. Really, this race is the most likely for me. The views will be stunning and I can get a vacation in as well!!

What other races should I have on my radar? If you have any you love or are planning to try, let me know! I am trying to broaden my race horizons past Disney World :)

Things to Note: The picture above was taken by my favorite Disney blogger, Ricky Brigante from Inside the Magic. His flickr page has lots of super fun pictures for your viewing entertainment.

Things to do on a Roadtrip

I love road trips so much, but sometimes, those miles seem to never end and you are left hoping for a nap. Sure, naps are great, but you can only sleep so much on the road before the driver gets lonely and you go crazy. Note, sleeping is even worse when you are  the driver... Not recommend.

These three things to do on a road trip are my three go-to boredom busters. I will admit, we started a road trip yesterday and have already done all three of these, along with a nap. I also plan on doing all three again tomorrow and every day until we get home!

Listen to an Audiobook

Ok, this is probably not the wisest thing to do if you are sleepy, but it is still a great option during a road trip. When I was younger, the family would always bring some fictional audiobooks along for the ride. Now, the hubs and I mainly listen to books on personal and business development. Some of my favorites from past trips include Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Zappos founder, Tony Hsieh- it is super interesting and great for any business minded individuals. Anything by Tim Ferriss is super great too- The 4-Hour Body is filled with tons of health-minded tips and a bit more interesting to listen to rather than read.

Isometric Exercises

Isometric exercises are one of the few types of exercises that can be done in the car. This form of exercise does not need any movement at all, but instead, uses the contraction of muscles while remaining still. If you are the passenger in the car, begin by contracting your toes for 10-seconds, then relaxing them. Next, contract your feet, lower legs, upper thighs, bum, stomach, fingers, lower arms, upper arms, back, and jaw in that order for 10-seconds each. Try doing this from toes to jaw, then back to the toes again. This is a great way to burn some calories, work specific muscle groups, and burn fat! Isometric exercises are also great to do if you suffer from any joint pain.

This is one of my favorite things to do on the road, while at the gym, or just sitting at my desk at home. Podcasts are great- there is no commercial interruption, topics are geared towards interests, and there is no need to watch anything! My two favorite podcasts are Inside the Magic and The Jillian Michaels Show. Inside the Magic covers all Disney news both nationally and internationally. It also goes over certain Universal and movie news along with guest travel tips. If you are interested in Disney, chances are you will love this podcast. New shows are usually up on Sundays.

The Jillian Michaels Show is, of course, hosted by Jillian Michaels. Jillian goes over health tips, fitness in media, fitness questions, doctor's recommendations, and some other interesting, always changing topics. New shows are available on Mondays and run between 45-minutes and an hour.
