Does Wine Make You Fat?

by Jenni in Health

Does Wine Make You Fat?
Does Wine Make You Fat?

{via}

This is a question that has plagued me for years, does drinking wine make me gain weight? Is that just bloat? There are so many mixed opinions on wine, so let's find out the truth together.

Wine is Pretty Calorie Loaded

Wine can have anywhere from an abysmally low 25 calories to an embarrassingly high 400+. Obviously, not all wines are created the same way, and not all wines have the same sugar content. A pinot Grigio will hit you somewhere around 130 calories while a less sweet Sauvignon Blanc will be about 120 per glass. Reds will have the same range with Merlots and Pino Noirs being in the lower 120's and Burgundies being closer to 130.

A nice little trick to staying on the lower side of the calories is to steer clear of dessert and sweeter wines like Rieslings that can have anywhere from 125-240 calories per serving! Dry wines will have less sugar, and therefore, fewer calories. Reds will have more alcohol content (on average) and will take longer for your body to digest.

Wine Slows Your Metabolism

First off, wine is made up of 14% carbs and 86% alcohol. There are no fats or protein, and really, hardly any carbs. So where does that bloat come from? Well, any alcohol will trick your body into breaking it down before any food item. Calories from alcohol cannot be stored in the body, and therefore, must be broken down first. This means that if you are drinking a glass of wine with dinner, all digestion stops when that white or red touches your lips.

Likewise, all metabolic activity ceases and anything fat unable to be broken down will be stored. This process will also increase fat storage around the belly- that bloat!

Alcohol Increases Our Want of Fats

When we digest wine (or any alcohol), our bodies digest the alcohol first and the carbs second. This can lead to a drop in our blood sugar and a feeling that we must eat. And this is what leads you to binge eating after a big night out. Of course, there is pretty little chance of this happening with one glass, unless it is a dry wine which causes blood sugar to drop.

The sad thing is, any alcohol consumption will trigger the same area of our hypothalamus that says we need more fats. A chemical called galanin is produced when we drink alcohol or eat fatty foods. This chemical is also the one that makes us crave it. Therefore, the more we eat or drink, the more we will want to eat or drink.

What About the Bloat?

Yes, unfortunately wine can cause bloat. But, it may be for a different reason than what you are thinking. Alcohol dehydrates the body and increases the visible signs of cellulite, also known as my nemesis. Like galanin, both the bloat and the increased cellulite are tied together. Any alcohol will cause dehydration and inhibit vitamin absorption. This can lead to water retention, known as bloating, and increased cellulite since the skin is not as elastic as usual. Loss of elasticity in the skin can make cellulite easier to see because the fat molecules that are pulling on the connective tissue that is less elastic and more susceptible to that pulling effect.

The Real Kicker

Ready to think all science is just bored people spinning a bottle on what new discovery has been made? Well, here is is. Long and broad scientific studies have found that women in their middle ages who have had a normal amount of wine on a daily basis (one 5-ounce glass) gain less weight and are less likely to become obese than those that did not.

Of course, there are a few things we can do to ensure that one glass per day does not wreak havoc on our bodies. Be sure to drink plenty of water, only drink wine when your body is not digesting other foods, continue your normal healthy diet, and keep working out! All of these little things will ensure a healthy body now, and apparently, a healthy one later in life as well.

Things That Make Me Happy

by Jenni in Lifestyle

Things that make me happy
Things that make me happy

{via}

There are so many things that can make us happy in the world and, today, I wanted to focus on a few of those. With the Miracle Ball coming up and my super stress about this Saturday being the first ever event I have chaired, there are many a thing that I like to think about other than that looming to-do list. Here are a few of them.

  • A sense of humor. Yesterday our bathroom flooded and turned half of our bedroom, closet, and hallway into a nice little in-home pond. It took a bit to see the humor in it, but find it we did. I am so happy that us humans have the ability to take the bad and make it good. I am also thankful for a husband who helps me laugh.
  • The SNL 40th anniversary show. It was the funniest thing ever and the literal definition of happiness. So good, so funny, so many memories. I am really not sure which sketch was my favorite but Wayne's World is pretty high on the list for sure!
  • Federated Media and the accidental e-mail chain I got on. If you are a blogger and have any known (or unknown) connection to Federated Media, chances are you know what this is. Pretty much, I blogger thought she wrote an email to one person but sent it to the entire Federated Media email list. There were some pretty big names on that list- I'm looking at you, Damsel in Dior. It was my evening entertainment and the reason for this post. And now, I have about 900 new blogs that simply must be read!
  • The most amazing Harry Potter video ever that puts all of the important Snape moments in chronological order. If you are not crying by the end, your heart is made of stone.
  • My new Magic Kingdom Starbucks mug. It is only available at the Starbucks in Magic Kingdom and it is my new love. Oh, and I am compiling a post all about the must-do things at Wilderness Lodge, it should be up later this week or early next- Here is a little teaser below :)
Magic Kingdom exclusive Starbucks mug
Disney's Wilderness Lodge
  • This yoga video. It is simple, short, and left my buns sore the next day.
  • This dress. It is what I am wearing to the Miracle Ball and I cannot wait until Wednesday when it comes back to me from getting altered. When it got to the store I rushed in without brushing my hair or putting on any make-up. The face and hair will look a bit different Saturday night ;) Also coming Wednesday, the hub's new tux *squeal*
Pretty dress, no make-up

  • You! There are so many of you who have read and responded to this little blog over the past few years and I am so happy to have you in my life. Thank you!!!

What are a few of the things that have made you happy this week?

My 2015 New Year's Resolutions

by Jenni in Lifestyle, Health, Fitness

Happy New Year!!

Can you believe we are in 2015?!?! Just the number itself is crazy, let alone how fast I feel 2014 flew by but was one of the most productive and happiest years I have had yet. Sure, there were low points (some being very low points with family loss and sadness), but overall, I look back and see more happiness in 2014 than sad.

For me, a lot of this can be attributed to the goals I set in at the beginning of 2014 and my mental space throughout the year. This past year was about self improvement and getting things done. All my goals were related to breaking out of my shell, increasing what I do for others, and becoming a better person. Boy, did it make a difference! Mental clarity was higher and decisions were easier since I knew where I was going and what was most important to me. Of course, I still had those days of marathoning 7 different Netflix shows without seeing the light of day or sitting on the floor in our bedroom thinking that my life was pointless, but nobody is perfect, right?

Well, since that little goal list I made at the beginning of 2014 was such a personal hit, I decided to do it again. Get ready, because you are in for a super personal post filled to the brim with new goals and personal development. If you do not feel like braving this heck-a-long post, I seriously understand. Just knowing that those in the P+K community have seen these helps me keep them throughout the year. Likewise, I would so love to know what any of your 2015 goals are. What kind of year do you plan on this being for you?

By the way, this year I have categorized them into six different areas of life with goals in each and a game plan of how I am going to get things done. You may notice some overlap between this year and last, that's because I am a firm believer in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle. I also left some things out that are maybe too personal and do not fit with what the average reader would understand (i.e. business stuff and family things)

Ok, here we go!

This year is about becoming a deeper, well rounded, and kinder human being; about Organization and becoming a better leader.

Hands Down, The Best Stuffing Ever!

by Jenni in Food

The best cornbread stuffing ever- and vegetarian!
The best cornbread stuffing ever- and vegetarian!

{via}

Are you looking for a good stuffing for all those friends and family this Thanksgiving?

Every year I make the vegetarian stuffing for myself and all our vegetarian and pescetarian family members. Most years, the carnivores of the family will try a bite or two but they never get more- that is, until last year. Last year, I decided to make this cornbread stuffing and everything changed. Instead of having plenty of my stuffing left and none of the "real stuff" as they call it, mine was the first gone and I could hardly get seconds.

Vegetarians and meat eaters alike love this stuff. And really, I cannot blame them. It tastes like home, happiness, Thanksgiving traditions, a dash of sweet, and a bit of salt all mixed in one. This is seriously the best stuffing ever. If you have looked at the ingredients, you may be thinking that I have lost my mind since it has chicken broth as an ingredient. Well, I have not lost my mind and forgotten that chicken is a meat. Thankfully, this is an easy swap out of vegetable broth instead of the chicken.

The reason I did not put this recipe on the blog last year is because I needed some family guinea pigs to see if it was just as good with the vegetable broth. Turns out, it is! Even my brother-in-law's mother, a southern cook extraordinaire, loved it. So, here are the simple changes I made.

  1. Switch out chicken broth for vegetable broth
  2. Use 3/4 cornbread and 1/4 white
  3. After adding the broth I let it sit overnight and added a bit more before sticking it in the oven.
  4. No breadcrumbs over top.
  5. And finally, here is a direct link to the recipe to make life a bit easier :)

This recipe is so simple and so good, I suggest everyone throw out their other Thanksgiving stuffing plans for this year and do Vegetarian Cornbread Stuffing instead! Trust me, you would not regret the decision ;)

As far as vegetarian and healthy sides go, I will also be making this Sweet and Spicy Brussels Sprouts recipe for Thanksgiving this year. Since we have some family who enjoy spicy and some that do not, my plan is to add no chili flakes to one batch and have another that is spicy enough for everyone to enjoy! Gah, I cannot wait to put all these in my mouth!

Also, as I write this I have an adorable, giant baby cat purring on my lap and snuggling my face. If you, like me, cannot get enough of adorable baby cats, I would suggest heading over to my insatgram page for blog updates and all the adorable cat pics your heart desires!

And, we will be having a motivation post a bit later today.
